Acupuncture and Fertility

If you know about me, then you know I believe in a holistic approach to my medical therapy.

History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture was first recorded in China about 2,000 years ago, but most believe the practice began between 3,000–4,000 years ago. Techniques can vary widely, but traditional Chinese acupuncture is the most commonly used type of acupuncture in the United States. Patients are always asking me about the benefits of acupuncture and if it can improve their chances of conception.

Current Studies

The current studies surrounding Acupuncture and Infertility are mixed. Acupuncture proponents, including myself, have recommended it for a variety of conditions that can impact your fertility, including but not limited to: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, endometriosis, issues with ovarian reserve and problems with sperm quality. Although current research on acupuncture has not proven to be a fix all solution for any of these conditions, we know one thing for sure: Acupuncture has been shown to promote relaxation and lower stress hormones and this in itself may be beneficial for your fertility.

When is the right time?

From our current knowledge, there is no strictly defined timeline for when you should start Acupuncture in relation to your Fertility Journey. However, most women are advised to start acupuncture 3 months before they start treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). Treatment may range from 1-3 times per week for 2-6 weeks, depending on your provider and your diagnosis. The most important thing is that the timing is right for you! Fertility treatments are stressful and you may benefit from acupuncture at different times throughout your own journey.
